Idol worship is deeply rooted in the Indian culture. For some, like us, Sachin is a great batsman. A class apart. But for idol worshipers he is much much more. He is a god. They can not see his god being falling from the crest. They can not believe that including any such player, who is running off form almost consistently, in the team virtually means making the team weaker. They can not believe that such a player needs some critical advice too. He is all capable by himself, can do nothing wrong any day and any time.
We shall have to place a person above than our nation if we go by this sentiment.
There was a time when there were almost larger than life personalities in the West Indian team. (Sir) Garfield Sobers and Rohan Kanhai. And the team was persistently suffering because of their personality clash. How to bell these two big cats. W hen enough became enough some on suggested to bring back (sir) Frank Worrel back in the team from his retirement. And only he could make these understand well that no person is bigger that the teams interests and nation’s pride.
Can BCCI rise to the occasion? Does our team need a coach at all in the present circumstance? There appears to be a free for all situation for some of the much moneyed senior players. Who prefer to go by their own style of game irrespective of the demands of the situation or of official brief? Ask these players they will prefer personal baggage carrying peons to a nagging coach or an interfering manager.
Roll a few heads if you have to. Discipline the team first. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Too much money makes person too much self sighted. Too much media hype makes them too much high headed. It is a now or never situation. Will and can BCCI muster enough courage?
